Having a window AC unit is one way to keep your home cool during hot summer days. However, all of that heavy-duty use can make it collect dirt and dust, which can cause problems with the unit’s performance. This is why you should get in the habit of giving it a thorough cleaning regularly.

Keeping your window air conditioner looking new and efficient is an easy process. With just a few minutes of your time, you can freshen up the unit so that it works at its best cooling capacity. Here’s how to clean your window air conditioner in a few steps.

1. Gather Cleaning Materials
You will need to gather some cleaning supplies before getting started. These materials should include:
  • Mild soap or detergent
  • Reusable cloth or sponge
  • Soft-bristle brush or fin comb
  • Warm water
  • Screwdriver
2. Clean the Filter

First, ensure your window AC unit is unplugged, and then take off the cover for the unit and remove the filter. Remove any dust and debris from the filter using a vacuum, and wash it with warm soapy water. Rinse the filter with warm tap water, and then leave it out to air dry before placing it back into the unit.

3. Wipe Down the Exterior and Grille

While your filter is drying, wipe down the top and sides of the unit using a soft, damp cloth. Use warm water and mild detergent and wipe down the grille. Be sure to thoroughly clean inside small spaces where dust and dirt collect and in between the gaps where air flows into the unit. Let the exterior and grille dry completely before reattaching it and running the unit.

4. Dust Off the Coils and Fins

After cleaning the exterior and grille, proceed to gently comb the fins inside your unit using a soft-bristle brush or a fin comb. Next, dust off the coils by spraying condensed air inside the AC unit. Make sure you are thorough in removing any dirt that could be stuck in the coils. A buildup of dirt and debris can keep your AC from working correctly.

5. Empty the Drip Tray and Reassemble the AC Unit

Finish cleaning the unit’s interior by emptying the drip tray and clearing the drain. Ensure that there is a clear drain pathway to let water flow out of the unit. After ensuring everything is clean and dry, reassemble your window AC unit and run it at high for a few minutes to ensure all air passages are cleared.
