In recent years, more focus has been placed on geothermal energy. On a large scale, a geothermal system could use the earth’s natural heat to produce electricity. Geothermal energy also relates to our individual properties, and many people in our area have installed geothermal units. With a system like this, you’d be taking advantage of the natural heat stored in the ground. That heat would be transferred into your home in the winter, and in the summer, heat would be transferred from your home into the ground. This type of heating system is called a geothermal heat pump.

Advantages

The biggest advantage of a geothermal heat pump has to do with efficiency. Because it can capture heat from the ground and bring that heat inside, it doesn’t have to work as hard as a traditional furnace that has to create its own heat. Over time, the energy savings could really add up. A geothermal heat pump can also double as an air conditioner in the summer, and it might be able to heat your hot water tank, too.

Disadvantages

While geothermal systems are very efficient, they tend to have high upfront costs. The energy savings could be worth it in the long run, but the initial investment is still quite expensive. Further, it might not work for all properties, especially if the ground around a home is particularly rocky. Some geothermal systems might need to work with supplemental heating systems if the winter temperatures are extreme. Fortunately, modern advancements have made geothermal heat pumps much more effective, and our region doesn’t typically get too cold.
